India and China - Duration of Compulsory Education Comparison
China's nine-year compulsory education policy, which was launched in 1986, enables students over six years old nationwide to have free education at both primary and secondary schools.
China's nine-year compulsory education policy has made great achievements in recent years, covering more than 160 million primary and middle school students. so far in both rural and urban areas, said Education Minister Zhou Ji at a news conference Friday.
Several factors work against universal education in India. Although Indian law prohibits the employment of children in factories, the law allows them to work in cottage industries, family households, restaurants, or in agriculture. Primary and middle school education is compulsory. However, only slightly more than 50 percent of children between the ages of six and fourteen actually attend school, although a far higher percentage is enrolled. School attendance patterns for children vary from region to region and according to gender.
